Three days Mekong Delta trip from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Phen or also known as ‘Tourist-Souvenir-Shopping-Tour’. As you can guess there were a lot of people selling souvenirs everywhere. Lucky enough it was mostly on the first day and the following days were much more enjoyable.
On the first day we visited the Coconut Island where coconut candy bars are made. We have spend so time seeing the how rice noodles are beeing made. This was actually impressive as all parts of the rice plants are used in the process. The rice shell is used to fire the stove. On the stove the liquid gained from the rice grain is spread like a French crêpe and heated up. This rice pizza is later dried in the sun. Then it gets cut up into small strings – the Noodles. We also had a chance to see and sample products made from honey. Some local guy (picture below) had to hold up the beehive so our guide could explain how the products are made. The poor local guy didn’t look happy and probably gets stung several times a day – I felt sorry for him.
Lucky enough some tourists ordered the severely overpriced fish so I could take a picture of their food.
The third day was spend driving to the next city and visiting a crocodile farm. There used to be many crocodiles in the Mekong years ago. Not anymore as all of them have been killed. The meat is used for cooking and the skin to manifacture handbags, shoes and so on. Now the only crocodiles remaining are the ones in this farm. We had a great evening with an unexpected outcome. As always when I just aimlessly walk around something unique happens. Same this time. We walked along the river and ended up in a riverside café where only locals go to drink. The waiter was constantly smiling at us but was to shy to approach us. Later he came up to us and asked to sit down with us to practice his English. It was a very basic but fun conversation. Then out of nowhere came a French guy to our table and also asked to join. Yes, why not. Turns out he visited a Vietnamese friend here. We had good fun together and decided to go for karaoke. The waiter also came along as the bar was closing. Great fun.
Next and last day we went to see the floating market. Then we continued our journey by boat and bus to Phnom Phen.
